Printable flyerCHALLENGE SUCCESS: The Well-Balanced Child: Avoiding Stress and Over-Scheduling
(Follow up from Race to Nowhere)  - Tuesday, November 8th at 7pm in the Cafeteria

RSVP on ivolunteer here

Children today live in a culture that is increasingly characterized by a “more is better” and “earlier is better” mindset both in and out of school. This fast-paced existence for kids too often places them under undue pressure and stress, which can result in burnout, disengagement, unhealthy life patterns, or debilitating health problems. Further, over-scheduling infringes upon the most productive activity for children: unstructured play. This thought provoking program is a must for parents seeking a healthy balance between achievement and personal fulfillment for their children.

  • Explore the unique demands placed on children's time today
  • Examine how today's high pressure, fast-past culture can have unintentional but damaging effects on children
  • Discover simple ways your family can counter the fast-paced culture without sacrificing achievement and while allowing kids to be kids.

Last Year's Events
Seminar on Dyslexia –
Williams presented a seminar on dyslexia through Mission Valley Preparatory Academy, non-profit organization specializing in early intervention for dyslexia.  In the seminar we learned 1 in 5 kids have different degrees of dyslexia ranging from moderate to severe. A trained professional can accurately diagnose a child with dyslexia at age 5. Kids with dyslexia learn to read and write differently, sounding out words make no sense to them. MRI’s have proven they have under-activation of neural pathways in the back of the brain. Dyslexic readers increasingly activate the front of the brain to read. Michele Waterman, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Mission Valley Prep said, “Early Identification is the key. There are proven programs that can help your child such as: Orton-Gillingham scientifically-based programs, Slingerland methods, and Lindamood Bell programs and techniques.”

Some other resources that you can get your child tested at and the services they need are Children’s Health Council and Reading & Spelling Solutions.
