WINS GATE Program mailing list:

WINS GATE Program is the parent run organization that brings enrichment programs to Williams GATE student and family communities.   Families with a 3rd to 5th grade GATE student at Williams are encouraged to join the Mailing list Yahoo group if you are not already in it.   

Who should join?

All families with a 3rd to 5th GATE student are asked to join.  Most 4th and 5th GATE student families are already on the list.   We ask all 3rd GATE student families and upper grade families who are not currently receiving e-mails from the yahoo group to join.   This is the only way you could receive communications from the group.

 Geography Bee is Coming to Williams

Is your child a 4th or 5th grader interested in Geography, or simply wants to learn more  ?

Enroll in the Williams Elementary Geography Bee. This year, Williams Elementary has registered in the National Geographic Bee.(http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/).

There will be a school level contest which will pick a single winner, who will then take a written test to qualify for the state level. This being the first year, we are a bit late in getting started, so we apologize for the short notice.

 Details about the school competition

  • Prelim level: A written test 7:45-8:45am on 1/13/2012 at the school, room to be announced. Sign up at http://williamscommunity.ivolunteer.com/event_070. 
    Note this is not a volunteer signup, it is a student participation signup. Please put in student name, not parent name.
  • The 10 students with the highest scores will advance to the School final.
  • School final: 1-2 hours in Week of 1/16/2012, details to be annouced soon.

GATE After-School Math Enrichment Program
Logic and Problem Solving 2


Fun Math Club will continue its Logic and Problem Solving math
enrichment program this winter at Williams Elementary School.
Please note: All GATE students are eligible; participation in the fall
program is NOT a prerequisite for the winter program.


Logic and Problem Solving, part of a series of programs for GATE
students, focuses on teaching and exercising advanced mathematics skills
from the Mathematical Reasoning strand of the Mathematics Content
Standards for California Public Schools. Lessons are presented using hands on,
engaging activities such as puzzles, games, magic, and art. Students'
weekly work is collected into portfolios that they bring home at the end of
the series. Weekly updates will be sent to parents via email.


Who: GATE Students at Williams Elementary

When: 8 weekly after-school meetings, 3:05 - 4:05 PM,
Wednesdays, January 11 to March 6,
(Jan 11,18,25, Feb 1, 8,15,29 Mar 6).
No meeting on Feb 22.

Where: Williams Elementary School, room TBD

How much: $100

Space is limited to 20 students.

** Wins GATE Committee: A new GATE committee is formed under WINS Academic program. Goals for this parent volunteer led committee is to help improve GATE education at Williams. Priorities for 2011-12 school year include:  Bring in  ideas from parents and teachers,  set up GATE summer camp and afterschool enrichment programs, form competition teams in various subjects, create a forum for GATE parents to communicate with school and with each other. Volunteers are needed to run or support enrichment programs or competition teams.

* GATE parent mailing list: 4th and 5th  GATE student parents should have received an invitation to join a Yahoo Group for Williams GATE programs. This is the ONLY communication channel for WINS GATE program. Joining the group is mandatory for receiving future GATE program related announcements. If you choose not to join or leave the group, you will not be receiving any announcements. If you don’t have an invitation, please check your spam folder, or e-mail  williamsgateprogram@yahoo.com   This is an announcement only Yahoo group, which means member information is not shared,  members are not allowed to load file, post messages, etc. The tightest privacy control is applied.  You and your student’s privacy is being protected.   

We are planning some exciting enrichment programs for the fall. The proposals are uploaded to the Yahoo group web page. Please check them out and plan ahead.

* GATE program on face book: 4rd and 5th GATE student parents should have received a link to WilliamsGATE on face book. Participation is optional. This is the channel for Williams GATE student families to communicate with each other.

*Register now for Williams GATE speech program

Williams GATE Speech Program CurriculumThis course is designed to build self-confidence in students through fun and entertaining lessons that focus on developing the content and presentation of short speeches. Materials and activities for the course were developed by
Mrs. Brasher and the Leland team members; they have been used successfully by
Mrs. Brasher for the past three years in elementary classes at four SJUSD
schools, as well as during an elementary school speech workshop held over the
summer and earlier this fall.

When: Tuesday after school 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm.
Remaining lessons will be scheduled later. It will be once a month from
Jan to May for 5 lessons.

Cost: Each student is asked to pay $45 to the Leland Speech Club and the
parent is asked to volunteer 4-6 hours to judge for a high school debate
competition at Leland/Bret Harte.

To register for this class, please send an e-mail to
williamsgateprogram@yahoo.com  with your student's name, class/teacher and the time slot the parent is available for judging.

Judging is required in order for the student to sign up. Available slots for
judging are:

March 18th- 7:30-1, 12:30-6
March 23rd- 2:30-7:00
March 24th- 7:30-1, 12:30-6
March 25th- 7:30-1, 12:30-5

Once you have e-mailed  to register, e-mail will be sent on how to send in
payment.
